Parkurbis, Science and Technology Park of Covilhã, SA, created in 2001, is a Science and Technology Park located in center of Portugal. Acting as a toll for the local and Regional development based on the scientific and technological entrepreneurial, provides support to new technology based firms born inside the University of Beira Interior.

Parkurbis activity is based in 4 main pillars: promotion of entrepreneurship; support to the creation of new technology base firms (NTBF), from de idea to the start-up; access to investment; support to internationalization of the NTBF.

With incubation facilities, Parkurbis fosters, currently, 34 companies, 5 of which are product development centers of major Portuguese ICT companies.

University of Beira Interior is one of the most recent public universities in Portugal. Since 1986, it has built several learning and research facilities structured in 5 faculties, 13 research units, several centres and services that promote teaching, research of excellence and service provision for the community. The fields of knowledge present in faculties include engineering, sciences, social sciences, humanities, arts and letters and health sciences. Teaching is delivered to more than 7000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. Fundamental and Innovative research, knowledge transfer, and entrepreneurship activities are also central to the university’s mission as shown by the outcomes of its R&D units and groups, their participation in many national and international R&D projects and consortia, and its collaborative links with important industrial partners. UBI has also received in the past years a number of spinoffs founded on the research findings of graduate students and professors, contributing decisively for the diversification of the regional economy. Additionally, UBI has been promoting the protection of its research results, by the dissemination of good practices in patenting and protecting the authors’ rights.

Created in 1984, the International Association of Science Parks and Areas of Innovation (IASP) is a knowledge-based network which brings together science and technology parks (STPs), areas of innovation (AIs) and innovation-based business incubators (BICs), as well as R&D institutions, universities, consultants and experts in economic regional development and technology and knowledge transfer.

IASP gathers 389 members in 69 countries, representing a network of over 128.000 companies, most of them belonging to the innovation and knowledge economy. The mission of IASP is to be the global network for STPs, AIs and BICs, driving worth, internationalization and effectiveness for its members. IASP main asset is the tremendous experience and know-how accumulated on all matters related to the design, conceptualization, launching, construction and management of STPs and AIs from a global perspective.

IASP is a NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations and a founding member of WAINOVA, the World Alliance for Innovation, which coordinates 28 associations of STPs and BICs all over the world.

The Hanse Parlament was founded in 1994 to promote small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the Baltic Sea region, in particular in the fields of qualification, research and innovation and thus to strengthen the area’s competitiveness. 50 chambers of commerce, industry and crafts from all Baltic Sea Region states belong to the association as well as other institutions supporting medium-sized businesses. Altogether they are serving more than 450,000 small and medium enterprises. The organisation is implementing several EU-funded projects, also flagship projects within the EUSBSR, that was initiated in 2009.In 2010 the Hanse Parlament established the Baltic Sea Academy, a non-profit network of currently 17 academic institutions with the common goal to bridge the gap between R&D institutions and SMEs.

t2i Technology Transfer and Innovation is a new limited liability consortium for innovation, a NewCo sponsored by Chambers of Commerce of Treviso and Rovigo, in which the activities, projects, human resources and infrastructure of Treviso Tecnologia and Polesine Innovazione, the two special agencies for innovation of the Chambers of Commerce of Treviso and Rovigo, are integrated.

The mission of the new company for innovation is to promote technological development and to innovate the production and the organization that can develop both the manufacturing base and the ruling class of the Veneto.

The main targets are:

  • to optimize specialized services and their capillarity, already offered by Treviso Tecnologia and Polesine Innovazione;

  • to increase the attractiveness and use of European economic resources;

  • to improve the offer consistency, accordingly to the regional and European lines of economic development (Smart Specialization);

  • to share investment plans for increasing the technical skills and competencies of the laboratories and creation of new services offer;

  • to develop new local markets, nowadays still isolated or not really focused on innovation.
